Polar Lights / Round 2 1:48 Plan 9 From Outer Space Flying Saucer

Hi, Everyone!

On April Fools' Day 2019, Round 2 posted an article on their blog site regarding the eminent re-release of the classic Lindberg 1:48 Flying Saucer model kit.  This time around, however, it will be released under the Polar Lights label (kit number POL970)!

Originally released in 1954, the Flying Saucer holds a unique place in scale modeling history as being the world's first injection-molded science-fiction kit. The model was also featured in the 1959 sci-fi / horror film Plan 9 From Outer Space where producer, writer, director Ed Wood used a few of the Lindberg Flying Saucer kits - suspended on wires - for several effects scenes.  Bonus trivia: for the movie, he had the models' jet engines removed and clear domes painted over to match the color of the hulls.

  • 1:48 scale - although it can be considered "studio scale" ;)
  • 10 parts
  • Newly expanded decal sheet features the movie poster artwork and 1:25 scale bumper stickers
  • About 6.25 inches (15.875 cm) in diameter
  • Clear bubble canopy
  • Display stand included
  • Late-May / June 2019 release
  • $24.95 U.S.D. MSRP

Check out the images below for the official box art and completed movie version build!

Don't worry...this was not an April Fools' Day prank.  It is real, and it would be a quick, fun build!

Stay tuned...

:)
